Let me tell you what happened when my house got burgled. They took pretty much everything in sight and even pulled out appliances and copper pipes while I was in hospital! OMG! SO when talking to the police I asked if I should maybe get a security system like an alarm or CCTV. ‘Just get a dog, love!’ the policeman told me! So a couple of years went by and we got our gorgeous rescue Patterdale called Blake. But are Patterdales good guard dogs? We put it to the test!

What makes a good guard dog?

When you think of Guard Dogs you often think of the big and scary like Alsatians, Dobermans and Rotweilers. But it’s quite often the small ones you’ve got to watch! It can be beneficial of course to have large guard dogs guarding property, but more important than the size of the dog is its personality and how protective it is of you. You want a dog that will….

  • Have good hearing so he/she reacts to people at the door
  • Be fiesty and energetic
  • Be protective of his humans and property
  • Have a loud and aggressive sounding bark.
