Let me tell you what happened when my house got burgled. They took pretty much everything in sight and even pulled out appliances and copper pipes while I was in hospital! OMG! SO when talking to the police I asked if I should maybe get a security system like an alarm or CCTV. ‘Just get a dog, love!’ the policeman told me! So a couple of years went by and we got our gorgeous rescue Patterdale called Blake. But are Patterdales good guard dogs? We put it to the test!
What makes a good guard dog?
When you think of Guard Dogs you often think of the big and scary like Alsatians, Dobermans and Rotweilers. But it’s quite often the small ones you’ve got to watch! It can be beneficial of course to have large guard dogs guarding property, but more important than the size of the dog is its personality and how protective it is of you. You want a dog that will….
- Have good hearing so he/she reacts to people at the door
- Be fiesty and energetic
- Be protective of his humans and property
- Have a loud and aggressive sounding bark.
- Is well trained so you can tell it to stop for example if it’s just the postman!
Are Patterdale Terriers Good Guard Dogs
If you were to ask: ‘are Patterdales good guard dogs?’ my answer would be a resounding yes! Because they are loyal and naturally protective of their owners they make excellent guard dogs. They are also fast and so they can get to the door within seconds of someone approaching it.
Our Blake always tells us that there is someone outside, quite often before the door has even been knocked! Also our Blake is a rescue dog — very protective of us and not a fan of strangers. I know for a fact that if anyone raised a fist at me Blake would be biting them pretty much immediately!
If you are in a situation where you want a good guard dog and family pet, but you don’t have the room for a big guard dog, go for a Patterdale terrier as a smaller guard dog option.
