Tavira is a small coastal city in Portugal. The city is located on the Rio Gilão, about 12km from the Atlantic Ocean and 70km south of Lisbon. It has a population of about 2700 inhabitants, and its old town (within the medieval walls) was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

If you’re looking for an inspiring place to visit this summer, then Tavira could be just what you need. There are plenty of things to do that will make this stopover one to remember! Here are some ideas:

  • Take a boat tour around the 12 islands -the tallest of these is Cabo de São Vicente with views over 50 kilometres away…
  • Visit the old town and take a walk around the walls. Running for 2,5km, these walls are one of the most important remains of medieval military architecture in Portugal. And did you know? They were constructed in 1241 to protect the town from pirates!
  • Go on a day trip to Cabo de São Vicente where you can walk around this historic lighthouse -built by King Manuel I in 1515. The view at the top is breathtaking…
  • Go on a kayak tour and discover some hidden coves…
